From the Forest to the Sea: Public Art Trail. Destination Lydney Harbour project, funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government's Coastal Community Fund. May 2022.
Lydney Harbour’s heritage as one of the UK’s most important sea links to the rest of the world has provided the inspiration for a new art trail that celebrates the past while looking resolutely towards the future.
‘From the Forest of the Sea’ features a series of installations that draws upon centuries of industry on and around the site, now designated a Nationally important Scheduled Ancient Monument in recognition of its use since Roman times.
Lydney Harbour sits on the Severn Estuary and was long used to transport oak, coal and iron from the Forest of Dean to the rest of the UK and beyond. It’s also famous for its massive tidal range and international importance as a wildlife habitat, especially for the wading birds it attracts.
The trail aims to reconnect the nearby town to the landscape of the Severn Estuary and develop the area as a recreation and tourism destination for local people and visitors alike.

Walking Trail
A series of playful stacked sculptures to discover along the former railway, now a walking trail at Lydney Harbour.
Made from oak cut to railway sleeper dimensions, each stack has the names of ships and collieries inscribed, clues of the stories that make up the heritage of the place.
