‘Llongborth’ (Harbour with Ships)

Notes on Langport / Llongborth.

The tidal waters of the River Parrett would have been a natural highway for Neolithic expeditions to the Severn Sea and Wales, writes Heather Ridgeway, with ‘Llongborth’ being the oldest known reference meaning ‘Harbour with Ships’.

Stone, ceramic, coal, iron ore and brick connected Somerset through the Bristol Channel to Ireland, Wales and even as far as Nova Scotia.

In‘West Country Men on Prince Edward Island’, Ann Gifford tells the story of timber shortages in Britain and the West Country leading to the emigration of ship builders from the West Country to Nova Scotia. Some of these vessels were subsequently sailed back to be operated on the Bristol Channel and into Somerset on the River Parrett.
